Services:
i. Crisis Hotline - A 24-hour crisis hotline is available to victims of domestic violence to offer support and allow victims to discuss their situation while remaining anonymous if they choose. The hotline is available at 440-244-1853. If you require immediate medical attention or in a life or death situation – always dial 911 first. ii. Shelter - Lorain County Safe Harbor/Genesis House exists to provide temporary safety, shelter, food, aid and support to the victims of domestic violence and their children who have reached the decision to leave the violent situation. When a person calls for assistance or information, a telephone interview is conducted; then if space is available, a trained shelter staff person arranges to meet the victim away from both the home and the shelter to explain the shelter and discuss what options are available. If it is agreed that the coming to the shelter is the best choice, arrangements can be made at that time. While shelter residents must make their own plans and decisions, an extensive client advocacy program is available to makes sure they have access to the information they need to move forward. Shelter staff is always available to discuss her options. |
iii. Safety Planning - It may help you and your children stay safe if you develop a plan for your safety ahead of time. There are sample forms you can fill out on the webpage. If you need some help working out your personal safety plan, you may want to ask a trusted friend, another survivor of abuse, or call Genesis House at 440-323-3400 or 440-244-1853. The design of a safety plan is an ongoing process. It is a good idea to review it periodically, so you will be prepared to use it. Keep it in a safe place where your abuser is not likely to find it. iv. Drop-In Support Group - Genesis House offers support groups for any survivor in the community who has dealt with, or is dealing with, domestic violence. These support groups are confidential and facilitated by agency staff. Not only is it an opportunity to meet others in a safe and supportive environment, but also an opportunity to gain information on how to better cope with feelings and experiences that surface because of domestic violence issues. There is no commitment required; come for one meeting or come for them all. There are multiple times and locations to choose from. |
